Our Team
Maurice Beer, BCIM, IFMCP
Medical Director
After attending Columbia College, where I majored in biology, I began my formal medical education at New York Medical College, graduating in 1973. From the outset, I was intrigued by the role that good nutrition and alternative therapies could play in the maintenance of good health. I decided to train in Internal Medicine to establish myself as a generalist focused on preventive health care.
After completing my residency in 1976, I served as medical director of a comprehensive family healthcare center, working closely with a pediatrician, psychiatrist, and social workers. We used a team approach that addressed both the medical and psychosocial needs of entire families. This experience helped appreciate me the many factors that impact one’s health. In 1981 I started my private practice on the Upper West Side. As my practice grew, I became disenchanted with the health care system.
Managed care had begun, and it required me to follow a model of care that focused on managing cost and providing nothing more than symptomatic care of the chronic health problems that were the core of my medical practice. Around 1995 I learned of a new approach to health care, Functional Medicine.
Finally, I had discovered an answer to the management of chronic health conditions. I went on to become certified as a Functional Medicine practitioner in 2014. The training I received has enabled me to provide a comprehensive combination of conventional and integrative medical therapies based on the principles of Functional Medicine. Last year I started my concierge practice, which enables me to provide a more expansive array of services focused on health optimization and healthy aging.
It also affords me the time to stay up to date on the latest advances in Functional Medicine, so I could offer my patients care that is personalized, predictive, preventive, and participatory.
